A new online casino with Swedish roots is preparing to enter the regulated market. BetCentury Sweden Limited has received licence number C112074 from Spelinspektionen, clearing the path for FunkySpins Casino to launch in spring 2026.
The brand carries significant industry backing. Henrik Tjärnström, who served as CEO of Kindred Group from 2013 until 2023, is behind the project. Kindred is the parent company of Unibet, one of the largest betting and casino operators in Europe. Tjärnström's decision to build a new Swedish-licensed brand from the ground up reflects broader confidence in the regulated domestic market, which has grown steadily since the Swedish Gambling Act came into force in 2019.
The Funkyverse Concept
The casino is built around what BetCentury calls the Funkyverse, a branded concept intended to run through the platform's visual identity and player experience. Exact details have not been released ahead of launch, but it appears to be a central part of how the casino plans to differentiate itself in a market increasingly populated by similar-looking operators.
On the product side, the operator is targeting a library of over 4,000 games at launch, covering slots, live casino, and table games. Payment infrastructure will rely on Trustly, Swish, and BankID, the three pillars that define how regulated Swedish casinos handle deposits, withdrawals, and player identity verification.
Entering a Competitive Market
Sweden's regulated online market has attracted a steady stream of new licence applications over the past two years, but operators with the profile of Tjärnström are less common. Most new entrants arrive without meaningful industry heritage, while FunkySpins carries a founding figure with experience scaling one of the continent's largest operators.
The market does not make things straightforward. Spelinspektionen enforces some of Europe's strictest bonus restrictions, limits operators to a single welcome offer per player, and requires full integration with Spelpaus, the national self-exclusion register. Operators that succeed in Sweden tend to do so through product quality and player trust rather than promotional volume.
Spring 2026 is the target window. No exact launch date has been confirmed.
